Emphasis on the Metabolic Syndrome. Reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease with diet is possible. The main dietary strategies include adequate omega- 3 fatty acids intake, reduction of saturated and trans- fats, and consumption of a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains and low in refined grains. Each of these strategies may be associated with lower generation of inflammation. This review examines the epidemiologic and clinical evidence concerning diet and inflammation. Dietary patterns high in refined starches, sugar, and saturated and trans- fatty acids, poor in natural antioxidants and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and poor in omega- 3 fatty acids may cause an activation of the innate immune system, most likely by an excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines associated with a reduced production of anti- inflammatory cytokines. The whole diet approach seems particularly promising to reduce the inflammation associated with the metabolic syndrome. The presence of inflammation is what makes most diseases perceptible to an individual. The choice of healthy sources of carbohydrate, fat, and protein, associated with regular physical activity and avoidance of smoking, is critical to fighting the war against chronic disease. Western dietary patterns warm up inflammation, while prudent dietary patterns cool it down. Abbreviations and Acronyms. ALA, alpha- linolenic acid; CHD, coronary heart disease; CRP, C- reactive protein; CVD, cardiovascular disease; IL, interleukin; s. ICAM, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule; s. VCAM, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule; TNF, tumor necrosis factor. A low- fat diet (. An unintended consequence of emphasizing low- fat diets may have been to promote unrestricted carbohydrate intake, which reduces high- density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL- C) and raises triglyceride levels, exacerbating the metabolic manifestations of the insulin resistance syndrome, also known as the metabolic syndrome (2 and 3). Three dietary strategies may help prevent coronary heart disease (CHD) (4): 1) increase consumption of omega- 3 fatty acids from fish or plant sources; 2) substitute nonhydrogenated unsaturated fats for saturated and trans- fats; and 3) consume a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains and low in refined grains (Fig. The effects of diet on CHD can be mediated through multiple biologic pathways other than serum lipids, including oxidative stress, subclinical inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and thrombotic tendency (5). Figure 1. Some mechanisms through which unhealthy dietary patterns may lead to coronary heart disease (CHD). LDL = low- density lipoprotein. Current evidence supports a central role for inflammation in all phases of the atherosclerotic process (6). Circulating markers of inflammation, such as C- reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- alpha, and some interleukins (IL- 6, IL- 1. Increasing attention has also been paid to the direct vascular effects of plasma proteins that originate from adipose tissue, especially adiponectin, which exhibits potent anti- inflammatory and antiatherosclerotic effects (1. Low plasma adiponectin levels are an independent risk factor for future development of type 2 diabetes (1. Moreover, it has become increasingly clear that inflammation strictly correlates with endothelial dysfunction and insulin resistance, with the best evidence coming from patients with the metabolic syndrome (1. We put forward the hypothesis that each dietary strategy associated with a lower CHD risk may in fact be associated with lower generation of a proinflammatory milieu, which may be one important mechanism linking healthy diets to reduced CHD risk. Criteria used for study selection to be included in the current review were English language, relevance to clinicians, study design, and venue of publication. Because controlled trials with clinical end points and assessment of inflammatory markers were lacking, we gave weight to observational studies and dietary interventional trials reporting intermediate end points. Increase consumption of omega- 3 fatty acids. The benefits of omega- 3 fatty acids in decreasing the risk of sudden cardiac death have been demonstrated in animal, epidemiologic, metabolic, and small clinical trials (1. These compounds have long been recognized to have anti- inflammatory activity, and their use in consolidated inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease, is expanding (1. Omega- 3 fatty acids decrease the arachidonic acid content of cell membranes, resulting in the synthesis of eicosanoids that have fewer inflammatory properties than those derived from omega- 6 fatty acids. Although omega- 3 fatty acids may inhibit the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF- alpha, IL- 1, and IL- 2 (1. Observational studies. In 4. 05 healthy men and 4. EPA) and docosaexaenoic acid (DHA) was inversely associated with plasma levels of markers of TNF- alpha activity, such as soluble TNF receptors 1 and 2; moreover, high intake of both omega- 3 and omega- 6 fatty acids was associated with the lowest level of inflammation (2. Therefore, the combination of omega- 3 and omega- 6 fatty acids may work well on CHD risk, as demonstrated by other cross- sectional data indicating that the combined intake of both fatty acids is associated with a lower risk of CHD than either type of fatty acid alone (2. Another cross- sectional study (2. Nurses’ Health Study I cohort demonstrated lower concentrations of many markers of inflammation and endothelial activation, including CRP, IL- 6, and E- selectin, among those in the highest quintile of omega- 3 fatty acids compared with those in the lowest quintile. In a randomly sampled cohort of 4. Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study (2. CRP levels. In the ATTICA study, those who consumed at least 3. CRP compared with non- fish consumers (2. Lastly, in subjects with existing CHD, granulocyte DHA content was inversely associated with CRP levels (2.
The Ketogenic Diet Part 2: Sugar, Insulin, and Inflammation. You can view the first part of this series here. This toxic level of glucose is like tar in the bloodstream, clogging arteries, binding with proteins to form damaging AGEs (advanced glycation end- products), and causing inflammation. This high level of glucose causes triglycerides to go up, increasing your risk for coronary artery disease. Then, sugars (and starches) get stored as fat. Because the cells of the musculature! Insulin is very toxic at high levels, causing cellular damage, cancers, plaque buildup in the arteries (which is why diabetics are more likely to have heart disease) and many other inflammatory issues such as nerve damage and pain in the extremities. Starch and sugar can also destroy nerve tissue, causing tingling and retinopathy, which in turn cause glaucoma and cause you to lose your eyesight. And on top of that, our cells become so damaged after a life of cereal and skim milk for breakfast that not only does in. Amino acids are the building blocks for our muscles and are synthesized from proteins. Worse yet, your muscles become cannibalistic. Because your body thinks there is not enough stored sugar in the cells, it sends signals to start to break down valuable muscle tissue to begin gluconeogenesis. So, where does that leave us? Instead of feeling energetic after you eat, you feel tired, and you crave more carbohydrates. Since you now have less muscle, exercise is getting too darn difficult, and the sad cycle continues. Because of everything your body has been through up to this point, thyroid disorders can occur. When your liver becomes insulin resistant, it can? Do they think that since they replaced table sugar with fruit that they’ve reduced inflammation? Sure, someone with a healthy metabolism may be able to handle more fruit than someone with chronic pain, but why even stimulate those sugary taste buds? A truly effective anti- inflammatory diet requires cutting out all sugar, and when I say sugar, I also mean starch. Your sugar craving may have gone away, but only because you ate sugar! People mistakenly think that they need to exercise to create a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. Exercise builds muscle, and muscle builds mitochondria. It is in the mitochondria where fat is oxidized so you can keep your cells and your liver insulin sensitized. That’s right. It’s really that simple! Does the Paleo Diet Eliminate Healthy Foods Like Brown Rice? Loren Cordain, the creator of the Paleo diet, theorizes that by eating like our Paleolithic ancestors did, you'll be healthier and thinner. For a Paleo dieter, that means meals which contain more animal proteins and far fewer grains, beans, legumes and dairy products than recommended by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Some nutrition experts feel this isn't a nutritionally wise eating pattern. Talk to your doctor before beginning the Paleo diet or any other diet that requires you to eliminate whole food groups. Restricted Foods. While you're on the Paleo diet, you're instructed to avoid eating all cereal grains, including brown rice, wheat, oats and barley, and any product prepared from them, such as bread or noodles. You'll also need to avoid all dairy products, salt, beans and legumes, refined vegetable oils like canola oil, processed foods and anything containing refined sugar. According to Cordain, eating these foods will make your blood acidic and increase your risk of hypertension, kidney stones, osteoporosis and asthma. News & World Reports counters that there hasn't been enough scientific research to determine if these health claims are accurate. Expert Insight. Joy Dubost, a dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says that although the Paleo diet can help followers control their intake of sugar, sodium and processed foods, its restrictions on healthy foods like brown rice can leave you without an adequate intake of the B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D and calcium. You also won't reap the benefits of the antioxidants contained in whole grains. Without these nutrients, you may be more likely to develop heart disease, cancer or diabetes. Open Meals. If you're having trouble eliminating all of the Paleo diet's restricted foods from your diet, or you're concerned about never having any dairy products or grains, Cordain says that you can choose to incorporate some . Grains contain toxic antinutrients — substances that prevent your body from absorbing the nutrients it needs and that create autoimmune and digestive irritation — and inflammatory proteins like gluten. They damage your gut lining and cause irritation throughout the body. Many of these grains also cause the body to release insulin, which triggers fat storage. Credit: . Candy, baked goods, junk food, and prepackaged meals are usually loaded with chemicals, additives, sugar, and other ingredients you’ll find on the Paleo “no” list. Eating Paleo means eating real, natural food, so foods produced in a lab or a factory are out. Let go of the legumes. Cream. Half- and- half. Milk. Sour cream. Yogurt. One exception to the no- dairy rule is clarified butter from a cow that’s organically and grass- fed. This type of butter is an excellent source of healthy fat. Wipe out white potatoes. White potatoes are like the useless, black sheep of the vegetable family, and they deserve a shady reputation. Because of their high sugar and starch content, they produce a big insulin response, and they also contain antinutrients that can cause intestinal distress. Be extra careful not to eat potatoes that appear to be turning green because it’s an indication of an increased level of solanine and chaconine. These substances occur in nature to ward off insects, disease, and predators by making the food bitter, which also makes them toxic to you. So if your potatoes taste bitter or are starting to turn green, definitely take them off the menu! Say “no” to added sugar. Eliminating all sugar from your diet is impossible. After all, the carbohydrates in healthy vegetables and fruits are, essentially, sugar. For optimal health and weight loss, you need to eliminate added sugars from your diet, including sugar in all its (deliciously sweet) forms and artificial sweeteners. All types of sugar, including high- quality honey, produce an insulin response in your body. But once in a while, a little honey can be a sweet treat as part of a healthy Paleo diet. Ignore industrial and seed oils. These oils are often billed as “healthy,” but they’re not naturally occurring fats, so they require significant processing to become edible. They’re prone to turning rancid and creating free radicals in your body, making them very inflammatory. Canola oil. Peanut oil. Corn oil. Safflower oil. Cottonseed oil. Soybean oil. Margarine. Sunflower oil. Palm kernel oil. Trans fats. Partially hydrogenated oil. Vegetable shortening. Is Jenny Craig the Best Weight-Loss Plan? The pre-packaged diet food based plan scored.

What You Can Eat and What You Can't. Think uncooked, unprocessed, mostly organic foods. Your staples: raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains. Eating out can be tricky, and if you go organic, you may need to go to specialty stores for a wider selection than your usual grocery store. Cooking and shopping: Prep work can be extensive. What Else You Should Know. Eating lots of veggies and fruits helps control blood pressure. The diet is low in sodium, so it might help lower your chance of stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, and kidney disease. Losing weight and keeping it off can help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes. But because most people who eat raw foods exclude animal products, you may need to take vitamin supplements to make up for any gaps in your diet. Cost: You don. Organic ingredients tend to be more expensive. Kitchen appliances like juicers, blenders, and dehydrators are another expense. Support: You can do this diet on your own or find online resources, like recipes. What Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, Says: Does It Work? Plus, contrary to the claims of many raw food fans, cooking does not make food toxic but instead makes some foods digestible.
